BIOGRAPHIE
Elsa Zylberstein débute sa carrière dans le magnifique film Van Gogh de Maurice Pialat, dans le rôle de Cathy la prostituée en robe rouge.
Cette prestation lui vaut le Prix Michel-Simon en 1992, ainsi qu’une première nomination au César du Meilleur espoir.
Elle sera ensuite renommée deux fois pour les films Beau Fixe de Christian Vincent et Mina Tannenbaum de Martine Dugowson.
Elle obtiendra également le prix Romy Schneider pour ce dernier. Elle inspire les jeunes réalisatrices comme Pascale Bailly, Diane Bertrand (Un samedi sur la Terre) et surtout Martine Dugowson, dont elle devient l’actrice-fétiche dans notamment Portraits chinois et Les Fantômes de Louba.
Elle obtiendra plusieurs rôles dans des fresques historiques internationales : la femme de La Fayette dans le film américain Jefferson in Paris, Albine de Montholon (la maitresse de Napoléon) dans Monsieur N ou Alexandra dans Farinelli.
Elle incarnera avec beaucoup de justesse et d’émotion Jeanne Hébuterne la compagne de Modigliani dans le film de Mick Davis (avec Andy Garcia).
En 1996 elle tourne avec Christian Bale dans la comédie dramatique anglaise Metroland de Sean Durkin.
Dévoilant sa fantaisie, elle passe à la comédie en tournant le merveilleux film Tenue correcte exigée réalisé par Philippe Lioret, puis la belle comédie L’Homme est une femme comme les autres aux côtés d’Antoine De Caunes réalisée par Jean-Jacques Zilbermann.
La comédienne rencontre ensuite Raoul Ruiz qui la fera tourner dans quatre de ses films dont son film sur Proust Le Temps retrouvé puis Ce jour-là aux côtés de Bernard Giraudeau, film qui sera d’ailleurs en sélection officielle au festival de Cannes.
Faisant preuve d’un remarquable éclectisme, la comédienne passe d’un film de Chantal Akerman à une comédie avec Kad Merad (J’invente rien, Michel Leclerc 2006), ou encore à une variation très personnelle autour d’un roman de Christine Angot (Pourquoi (pas) le Brésil de Laetitia Masson).
En 2009, elle obtient un César de la Meilleure actrice dans un second rôle couronnant sa performance dans Il y a longtemps que je t’aime de Philippe Claudel qui sera présenté en sélection officielle au Festival de Berlin.
La même année, on la retrouve à l’affiche du film la Fabrique des sentiments de Jean-Marc Moutout qui sera également présenté à Berlin. Elle tournera ensuite Un baiser papillon de Karine Silla. Elle revient après cela sur le grand écran dans deux comédies.
Les Tribulations d’une caissière de Pierre Rambaldi et dans Plan de table de Christelle Raynal avec Franck Dubosc et Audrey Lamy. Son interprétation dans ce dernier film lui vaudra un prix d’interprétation au festival du film de comédie de l’Alpe d’Huez.
En 2014, elle figure dans l’adaptation du roman graphique de Posy Simmonds Gemma Bovery donnant ainsi la réplique à Fabrice Luchini et Gemma Aterton.
En 2015, elle joue le rôle d’Anna dans Un + Une de Claude Lelouch avec Jean Dujardin et Christophe Lambert. Tourné en Inde, le film reçoit un très bon accueil des critiques et du public.
Elle retrouve la comédie en 2016 dans le film des ex-auteurs des Guignols de l’Info Alexandre Charlot et Franck Magnier les Têtes de l’emploi avec Franck Dubosc et François-Xavier Demaison.
Le 1er février 2017 sortira Un sac de billes du réalisateur québécois Christian Dugay ou elle joue aux côtés de Patrick Bruel et de Christian Clavier.
Le 5 avril 2017 est sorti A bras ouverts, la comédie de Philippe de Chauveron, auteur du film à succès « Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au Bon Dieu ? », avec Christian Clavier, Elsa Zylberstein et François Damiens.
Elle retrouve ensuite Claude Lelouch pour un film chorale avec Jean Dujardin et Johnny Hallyday.
En 2018 elle tourne une comédie qui a un énorme succès en France (2,4 millions de spectateurs) avec Franck Dubosc et Alexandra Lamy. Elle est très remarqué dans ce rôle de secrétaire un peu fantasque.
Ensuite elle tourne un film a sketchs réalisé par Marc Fitoussi, Selfie.
Adaptation du best seller « je voudrais que quelqu’un m’attende quelque part », elle joue face à Jean-Paul Rouve le rôle de son premier amour.
Ensuite un film d’époque ou elle jour le rôle de la grande amoureuse de Léon Blum, Jeanne Blum. Un rôle fort et poignant.
Rôle principal de « Tout nous sourit » qui décrit l’histoire d’un couple qui cherche à nouveau sa vérité. Le film obtient trois prix au festival de l’Alpe d’Huez dont le prix d’interprétation féminine et le prix d’interprétation masculine.
Dans Adorables elle excelle dans un rôle de comédie qui narre l’histoire d’une mère dépassée par les agissements de sa fille de 13 ans.
En 2021, elle tourne dans un film chorale « Champagne », un groupe d’amis qui se retrouve à la campagne et qui se connaissent depuis l’adolescence. Elsa joue le rôle d’une vigneronne qui accueille tout le monde.
Ensuite elle tourne un film pour Netflix de Jean-Pierre Jeunet Big Bug qui sortira pendant le confinement.
Elle travaille ensuite sur le grand projet sur Simone Veil un film qu’elle a coproduit et entièrement monté avec l’aide des producteurs Marvellous, Romain Legrand et Vivien Aslanian. Le film a été distribué par Warner et a été le plus gros succès en France en 2022 avec plus de 2,5 millions de spectateurs dans les salles. Le film a été un énorme événement et a marqué des générations. Le film est sorti aux USA et au Japon en août 2023.
Elle s’est investi plus que jamais dans ce rôle ou elle interprète Simone Veil de 36 à 87 ans.
Le film a été réalisé par Olivier Dahan réalisateur de « Edith Piaf ».
En 2023 elle tourne Club Zéro, sous la direction de la réalisatrice autrichienne Jessica Hausner. Le film est sélectionné en compétition officielle pour Cannes 2023. Elle joue le rôle de la mère de la jeune ado qui arrête de manger par endoctrinement d’une professeur jouée par Maia Vadikoska.
Elle tourne également en 2023 sous la direction de Claude Lelouch dans un film avec Kad Merad.
BIOGRAPHY
Elsa Zylberstein made her debut as an actress in “Van Gogh” – a master piece by Pialat in which she played a prostitute called Cathy.
She received the “Michel Simon Price” in 1992 for her performance and was nominated for the first time for “ César Award for Most Promising Actress”
She was then awarded twice for her performance in the movies “Beau Fixe” (directed by Christian Vincent) and “Mina Tannenbaum” (directed by Martine Dugowson). She also received the “Romy Schneider Price” for her role in “Mina Tannenbaum”.
She inspired young directors such as Pascale Bailly, Diane Bertrand (“Un Samedi soir sur la Terre”) and especially Martine Dugowson. She became Martine Dugowson’s favourite actress and acted in “Portraits chinois” and “Les fantômes de Louba”.
She then accepted a role in the comedy “Tenue correcte exigée” by Philippe Lioret and in the beautiful comedy “L’Homme est une femme” by Jean-Jacques Zilbermann and with Antoine De Caunes.
Elsa met the great director Raoul Ruiz and acted in four of his films including “Le temps retrouvé” about Proust, “Ce jour là” with Bernard Giraudeau – a movie selected for the Cannes Film Festival.
Truly versatile, she has held various roles: she starred in a comedy by Akerman, appeared in another one starring Kad Merad (“J’invente rien” by Michel Leclerc 2006), and held a role in a very personal adaptation of a novel by Christine Angot (“Pourquoi (pas) le Brésil” directed by Laetitia Masson).
In 2009, she won a “César Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role” for her performance in “Il y a longtemps que je t’aime” by Philippe Claudel – a movie presented at the Berlin Film Festival.
That same year, she played in “La Fabrique des sentiments” by Jean-Marc Moutout which was also presented in Berlin. She then appeared in “Un baiser papillon” by Karine Silla before playing in two comedies: “Les Tribulations d’une caissière” by from Pierre Rambaldi and “Plan de table” by Christelle Raynal with Franck Dubosc, Andrée Lamy.
She received the “Award for Best Actress” for her performance in “Plan de table” at the Alpes D’Huez Film Festival.
In theater, she played in Pirandello’s “Six personnages en quête d’auteur” by J.Lavelli, “La preuve” by David Auburn directed by Bernard Murat, “Le malin plaisir” by David Hare and more recently in “Le démon d’Hannah”.
In 2014, she appears in the adaptation of the graphic novel by Posy Simmonds Gemma Boveri with Fabrice Luchini and Gemma Arterton.
In 2015, she played the role of Anna in Un + une directed by the veteran Claude Lelouch with Jean Dujardin and Christopher Lambert. Shot in India, the film received a very good reception from critics and audiences.
She returns back to the comedy in 2016 in the film les Têtes de l’emploi directed by Alexandre Charlot and Franck Magnier with Franck Dubosc and François-Xavier Demaison.
On 1st February 2017 the film Un sac de billes directed by the canadian Christian Duguay with Patrick Bruel and Christian Clavier will be released in French theaters.
In April 5th, 2017 is released in France A bras ouverts, the comedy by Philippe de Chauveron, director of the blockbuster movie « Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au Bon Dieu ? » with Christian Clavier, Elsa Zylberstein and François Damiens.
She then reunited with Claude Lelouch for an ensemble film with Jean Dujardin and Johnny Hallyday.
In 2018 she filmed a comedy which had enormous success in France (2.4 million spectators) with Franck Dubosc and Alexandra Lamy. She is very noticed in this role of somewhat fanciful secretary.
Then she made a sketch film directed by Marc Fitoussi, Selfie.
Adaptation of the best seller “I would like someone to wait for me somewhere”, she plays the role of her first love opposite Jean-Paul Rouve.
Then a period film where she plays the role of Léon Blum’s great lover, Jeanne Blum. A strong and poignant role.
Lead role in “Everything Smiles” which describes the story of a couple who are searching for their truth again. The film won three prizes at the Alpe d’Huez festival, including the female actor prize and the male actor prize.
In Adorables she excels in a comedic role which tells the story of a mother overwhelmed by the actions of her 13-year-old daughter.
In 2021, she starred in an ensemble film “Champagne”, a group of friends who meet in the countryside and who have known each other since adolescence. Elsa plays the role of a winemaker who welcomes everyone.
Then she is filming a film for Netflix by Jean-Pierre Jeunet Big Bug which will be released during confinement.
She then worked on the major project on Simone Veil, a film that she co-produced and entirely edited with the help of producers Marvelous, Romain Legrand and Vivien Aslanian. The film was distributed by Warner and was the biggest success in France in 2022 with more than 2.5 million spectators in theaters. The film was a huge event and marked generations. The film was released in the USA and Japan in August 2023.
